The Backup Boyfriend

The Backup Boyfriend - River Jaymes 4.5 stars

I really liked this different take on the GFY story.

Alec, successful, brilliant doctor trying to get over his lover and work partner Tyler leaving him after two years. Prone to at times babbling or being struck silent when he is stressed.

Dylan, the motorcycle mechanic, has had a tough life and doesn't do anything more than a one night stand. His protective streak is brought out when he sees Alec stammering before his ex and the new boyfriend, blurts out that he and Alec are an item. They aren't. They barely know each other. And oh yeah, Dylan is straight but he doesn't mind playing the boyfriend for a few hours at a party.

I enjoyed watching these two men become friends and lovers. Alec is so used to being gay and being part of a couple, Dylan's friends with benefits attitude is difficult for him to understand. Dylan doesn't want to label their relationship or his sexuality. He is happy being what they are for as long as it lasts and doesn't care what other people think about it. Their two attitudes are at conflict, but neither really want to lose the other. Add in a meddling mutual friend and Tyler's continued presence in Alec's life and the tension mounts. At least there is one time where they are completely compatible, and that is when they are having hot, steamy sex.

The story is at times funny, heartbreaking, super sexy and has great pacing. The secondary characters all play their parts well. I am looking forward to the next book to get Tyler's story.
