Orphan Train: A Novel

Orphan Train - Christina Baker Kline 3.5 stars

This was a quick and easy read. I had never read anything about the orphan trains and was surprised at how long this "program" actually went on. The stories of 91 year old Vivian and 17 year old Molly parallel each other as Molly helps Vivian sort through her attic for a community service project. The focus is on Vivian's life, losing her family and being placed on the orphan train to be given away to anyone wanting some child labor who would "promise" to educate and take care of her. She is bounced around from one unsuitable home to another until her teacher takes an interest and saves her. Molly is in foster care and has also been bounced around and knows her time is limited in the home where she is currently living.

The story was a bit formulaic, but did keep my interest. To me it read like young adult in its simplicity, but I thought the author did a good job with her descriptions of Vivian's experiences as a child.
